Former UFC and Bellator heavyweight Matt Mitrione joined Ariel Helwani on Wednesday’s edition of The MMA Hour. He wasn’t on to discuss MMA however, he was on to talk about his debut fight with Triller’s Triad Combat.
The most notable thing to come out of the interview had nothing to do with combat sports, in fact, it had to do with life post-combat sports.
Mitrione made it crystal clear that he didn’t need to fight anymore for financial reasons and that his career path will be taking a change of course.
Matt Mitrione Could Become a Firefighter
“I’m probably gonna be a firefighter,” Mitrione told Helwani when asked about his ‘real career.’ “We don’t have an age limit at Purdue University, so I’m enrolling into EMT 1 and EMT 2 school, coming in January. Then I have to work as an EMT for a little bit and then I’ll apply for a firefighter at Purdue.”
When asked if he always wanted to become a firefighter,
“Yeah, that’s kind of always been my goal to work in some form of a benefit to society. I feel like because of the career and I always had to leave, like I said I live in Indiana, since I always had to leave to train and whatever else life would take me, I always felt like I was a parasite on the communities I’ve lived in, because I couldn’t give back, I couldn’t coach and I couldn’t do other things, because I never knew when I had to split. And you know me, I live on saying yes. A short-notice fight isn’t a big deal to me. So I’m like, yeah sure man, I might leave like that, go down to Florida, go train for two and a half weeks, three weeks — two months, who knows? And so I felt like I always lived off the community versus being able to provide. And I think this situation I can finally do that.”
Prior to this switch of careers, you can catch Mitrione this Saturday night against Alexander Flores at Triller’s Triad Combat event. The fight takes place live at the Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, on FITE pay-per-view.
